If you have listened to the news recently, you have almost certainly heard the expression "a bottleneck". It is a classic metaphor, an image used in place of a direct word or phrase that illustrates an idea/concept. It is meant to help your understanding of a more difficult concept or idea. When you come across one in your reading or listening, it might be helpful to make a mental image of that thing in your head and ask yourself what it could mean? In addition, the context or situation will be helpful. What do you think they could be talking about if, in fact, they are not talking about that thing?
The first clue is that they are clearly not literally (from the word's true meaning, opposite of 'figuratively') talking about the neck of a bottle because people have necks, but bottles don't and there is no giant glass bottle in the Middle East. Bottles do, however, have a narrow part near the opening that maybe resembles or looks like a neck: the narrow but important part of your body between your bigger chest and head. In fact, it is called the neck of the bottle. Okay, so are they actually talking about the narrow part of a bottle near the opening or mouth? Well, no, that doesn't make sense.

From the context, they are talking about something important in the movement or transportation of oil. So, a bottleneck is an important part or place of something.
Also from the articles or reports, you get that this is a key narrow area where Iran can destroy any passing tanker (a ship that carries a liquid like oil). So, as with a real bottle, the neck is a narrow place that limits or slows the flow of something. It is also, because it is narrow, easy to close with a cork, cap or stopper or in this case, a drone or missile attack: It is weak or vulnerable.
Beyond the USA/Iran story, the image of a bottleneck is often used when discussing a process. A process, by definition, is a group of steps necessary to complete a task. What controls the speed of the whole process? Well, each step happens at a certain speed or rate and logically, the slowest step, controls the speed of the whole process. It doesn't matter how fast the other steps are, or even if you make them faster. Only that slow step matters when it comes to the speed of the process. So, to improve my process time, the best thing I can do is to study the system, find that slow step, and work on speeding it up. That slow step is the bottleneck in my process. The study of bottlenecks is 'bottleneck analysis'.

Other expressions you could use with a similar meaning are 'pinch point' or 'choke point', the more technical sounding, '(rate) limiting factor' or recently, the more popular term, 'constraints'. In sports, it is often called a performance limiter. In a previous video, I talked about 'performance limiters' in your English. Is there a bottle neck in your career progress?
